Reflective Journal 4

Topics Covered:

This module was all about building our lesson into the Blackboard LMS.

Overview / Summary of Topics:
  • Building lesson folder
  • Including lesson introduction and objectives
  • Creating sections for lesson chunks
  • Building tests
  • Setting up a discussion board
  • Building Rubrics
  • Creating course links

Item of Interest:
I think I found most interest in making sure that everything worked properly. No broken links, internal links went to the correct page, etc. I am a little bit of a perfectionist, so I probably went through my final course about ten times and made adjustments each time. Hoping I got it right!

Areas of Help or Clarification:
The act of building the tests was a little tricky and it is definitely not something I could have figured out without the how-to video, so I am thankful for that. I think I figured it out though.

Comments

  1. Hi Amber, I really enjoyed with Blackboard Coursesites. I do agree with you that building the tests was tricky, especially the part of "pulling from the pool." The video's were helpful; thank goodness we had them. Thank you Professor Gale! I built a website in the past so I probably added more content than was needed for this lesson; however, I felt like I needed to provide "my imaginary students" with enough detail for complete understanding. I used the preview mode numerous times to make sure my information was clear enough that most anyone could understand it. At this point, I feel like I am ready to build a course and teach it. I am super excited to see what we learn from the capstone class.

  2. Hi Amber! I also enjoyed going back and looking over the folders and materials created.
I am going to say this hoping my tests turned out as they should, but the test generator was not that difficult for me. This is possibly due to the classes I am currently teaching have been transformed to online as everyone else in our state. I use Canvas, which in my opinion is more user friendly, and have been creating tests through that LMS. There are differences between the two, but I feel the current experience I've had with that helped me some with building the test in Blackboard. If you would like to ever meet on Zoom, I will do my best to help in any way possible. Again, I hesitated in saying all of that since my Blackboard assignment hasn't been graded yet. I'm hoping the randomized pooling worked for me. :)
Take care and I kind of miss talking with you. Our Zoom meetings might have been a little stressful in that class, but we definitely gained connections.

  3. Hello Amber! The multiple choice test was an item I had to go back an work on. I actually missed the Randomize option my first try but after going back and editing the test and selecting the Randomize option, the pool questions worked appropriately. I found Blackboard fairly easy to use and the video tutorials were a big help. I hope to get a chance to create another lesson in Blackboard soon and use more of the tools and become more familiar with Blackboard.

Topics Covered: Needs analysis and personalized learning Objective types and Bloom's Taxonomy How to write strong objectives Overview / Summary of Topics: Personalized learning discussed the why and how and positive and negatives that come with creating personalized learning experiences. The goal of personalized learning is to have course materials that fit the needs of individual learners. With personalized learning, information is efficiently transmitted and data collected creates a clearer picture of the individual learner's needs. While personalized learning would create an ideal learning experience for individuals, it can be incredibly time-consuming to create and implement. Objective types and Bloom's Taxonomy showed us the purpose and structure of objectives, emphasizing the importance of using measurable terms and avoiding generic verbs like "understand" and "learn." It also covered Bloom's Taxonomy and compared the original...

Overview / Summary of Topics: Motivation Relevance Fostering self-efficacy Creating satisfaction Fostering social belonging Lesson design project layout and materials needed Item of Interest: The lecture on relevance was the most interesting thing for me this week. I especially liked the note to focus on fulfillment of future goals. I know that I have definitely been guilty of retaining information only long enough for a test (current benefit) and I know that connecting something to future goals gives me more connection and reason to learn and retain information. I think this can especially be helpful when students are required to take courses that they may not actually be interested in.  Areas of Help or Clarification: I do not have areas of clarification this week.
